Do leopard geckos need to go to the vet for checkups? (It's not a problem, I'd just like to know.) Also, about how much does it cost to have a reptile examined?

I have a gecko and I've never taken him to a vet because it just seems unnecessary and expensive. It was $50 if I went but I didn't.

Initially, they should be checked for parasites. This usually requires an office visit charge because if positive for parasites, the vet will need to weigh the gecko and prescribe the correct dose of medication. Usually they don't need regular vet care as long as setup, temps, humidity and diet are correct. Occasionally we will see geckos with intestinal impactions, which can be avoided by NOT using any kind of sand or other loose substrate on the bottom of the tank. Shedding problems (shed in eyes and feet) are seen--can usually be prevented with a moist hide always available (on warm end of tank). And abscesses around the head/ears/eyes are seen--again usually from poor living conditions and improper temps. The price of an office visit/exam is going to vary a lot depending on where you live and who you go to. Only go to experienced reptile vets with reptiles. You can call around and get quotes.
