The Illuminati as a named group was started by Adam Weishaupt in Bavaria in May 1, 1776. He and his fellow conspirators used the existing Freemasonic Lodges to spread their doctrine against the Catholic church and kings. Since Freemasons had already taken vows of brotherhood and would hold certain things secret when entrusted, the Lodges were a natural vehicle for this. This continued until a messenger of the conspiracy was actually struck by lightening and thus apprehended, along with a code key to the Zwack code. Secret documents were soon decrypted and the society was immediately outlawed in Bavaria.

Remnants of it supposedly exist today and of course Brown is making money with his "Evil Illuminati" books following his hit with the DaVinci Code.

Freemasons did their immediate part in rooting out such conspiracies. It is forbidden today to discuss either religion or politics in Lodge, partly because of past associations like this.

Despite Fundamentalists of all religions who see Freemasons as evil devil worshiping anarchists, Freemasons are the businessmen (and women, in the case of Co-Masons), lawyers, bankers, bookstore operators, and teachers of the nation. Most of us have served in the military or some national service. Most of us are devout members of our religions (many and diverse).

Adam Weishaupt would find us poor fodder for his revolutionary group, thanks.

The Illuminanti were a society dedicated to openness, or illumination. Da Vinci is supposed to have been one. I.E. They believed in sharing knowledge, including the stuff that the church, local leaders, etc. said was herressy, shouldn't be taught etc.

The Free Masons are an order who believe in helping its members and generally humanity. There are several theories about their origins, including the Knights Templar. Many of their services and rights can draw direct comparison with ancient Hebrew ceremonies. Who knows?

So one believes in freedom of information, in order to better mankind, the other believes in bettering members and promoting mankind.

as mentioned, you can be a Freemason but not an Illuminati - the Illuminati does not exist (at least no group exists that can trace its lineage to the original Bavarian Illuminati)...

The Illuminati sprung up as a contemporary, and competitor of Freemasonry in the 1700's but died out quickly; they did espouse at the time to try to bring about a New World Order --- which is where all the conspiracy theorists get much of their material...
