I finally had it with my boss last night when she came in on her day off and was joking with a customer about how long it was taking me to get his whole chickens marked and ready for him. So I left my uniform and that with a note that she will see this morning. There are other reasons I left (including 6 days a week after I said I couldn't do it three months ago) but I need to know what to put on my new applications I send out Monday. I worked there for 4 months. I am a single parent and hadn't worked for the past 3 years (I worked from home freelancing) and need a current reference. How should I explain why I left without notice?

If you need a current reference, quitting without notice wasn't the best move you ever made no matter how aggravating she was - your employer isn't likely to give you a good reference.

On your resume, don't put a reason for leaving. If they ask in an interview, you'll have to explain, and if they call her, she'll probably tell them, possibly with her own spin. Leaving without notice will be looked at as unprofessional, and a potential employer will probably wonder if you'll walk out on them if things get aggravating - and they sometimes do in pretty much every job.

Good luck.

Being a adult you should of gave proper notice. You will have to explain why you quit without notice if you get the job interview. I wouldn't hire you because i would be worried that you would quit on me when I was depending on you.
Do you have anybody from the freelancing you could use as a reference?

It seems that your temporary stint would be wasted space on a resume or application. Keep in mind that if your new employer found out you lied on your app, they could can you. If you decide to mention your time with them, explain the scheduling conflict. Or perhaps the lack of support from management. Most companies take pride in their abilities to support and work with their staff. By telling them that those aspects are important to you, you create a sense of compatibility with them. They will see you as someone searching for what they can offer. Ignore those who are judging your parenting skills based on your walking out for they have no idea what kind of financial stability you have. Good luck to you!

Obviously you are a single parent that doesn't care anything about feeding their children.

Before you quit your job, you should have found another one. Meanwhile, what are your children doing for medical insurance? Doing without?

Sometimes you have to eat alot of crow when you are trying to take care of your children...but your children come FIRST.

PS: If you are going to quit a job every time someone criticizes you, then I would highly encourage you not to work again. That is part of life.
