Oh my god, don't follow Charles S advice and use a brillo pad. What is wrong with guys?
Just wait till iron cools and use baking soda and water and a soft cloth. Rub till clean.
And from now on, pay attention to the temperature of the iron when you iron your clothes. Different fabrics get ironed at different temperatures.

Heat up the iron & rub a candle stick at the bottom of the iron, When the candle melts, wipe the iron's bottom with a clean cloth ( that you won't use anymore ). This always works!!!

Have you tried baking soda? A paste of baking soda, and a little water should work. Use a soft rag, Also a little vinegar/water mixuter poured in the steam hole will clean out any hard water deposits. Just turn the iron on with steam, and iron a towel, to get the steam working, then empty the water, and rinse with cold water.

Heat equal parts white distilled vinegar and salt in a small pan. Rub solution on the cooled iron surface to remove dark or burned stains.
