Because they want to look trendy, and i think the ancient romans were just as bad(but with them, whatever the emperor had was the fashion!)
I don't really follow anything, though, although i do change my style of dress every 1-2 years!

It's not like this is anything new, following fashion has been going on since Thag the cavegirl decided to wear a rabbit skin instead of a bear skin. Before long everyone had to have rabbit skins and anyone in bear skin was looked down upon. And then when someone wove together the first fabrics I'm sure some one was saying to those who still wore animal skins "really! Rabbit skin? this is 10,000 BC the ice age is over we are now farmers and no hunter gatherers so get with the latest style!" It's not like this is the first generation ever to care about clothes: in the 1600's everyone had to wear knitted stockings rather than cut cloth because cut cloth was what old people wore. And that was a guy fad. None of this is new or different, it's been going on since people first wrapped animal skins around them to keep warm. It was going on when my great grandmother was a teen, when my grandmother was young, and I assume my great grandmother would say it was the same for her grandparents.

There are many reasons for people to be obsessed with fashion and how they can become obsessed.
The media keep showing the latest, best, newest, trendiest products available on TV, radio, magazines, newspapers, billboards.
High profile celebrities promote and get sponsored by big brand fashion companies. For example- DKNY, Calvin Klein, Versace.
Peer group pressure plays a role in becoming fashion obsessed, because you want to be or look as cool as your friends.
People are somewhat materialistic due to the nature of capitalism in Western countries.

Certain people need to feel as if they belong, so by following a fashion they feel they 'belong' within the group of others who also do the same. They use fashion as a uniform so they can identify with others and others recognize them as well. Or it could just be that they like the latest clothes. Me, I walk around naked all the time, sod fashion!!

i think people r obsessed b/c the fashion industry & the entertainment industry puts all these images into people's mind 2 make them think that if they don't keep up, they r not cool. if people would think 4 themselves, yes, the fashion industry would go bankrupt.

Why would you want the fashion industry to go out of business? I wouldn't mind if crappy stores like abercrombie (only good for the hot guy pics), hollister, and american eagle went out of business though.

I don't follow fashion. I barely even care about physical appearances.
The media tries to make people feel bad if they don't look "perfect". The media creates an image and expects people to acknowledge it.

Because, like with anything, people tend to gravitate towards the majority...even when it comes to fashion!
Sad but true!
