There are legitimate accredited universities, that give credits for "life experience" However most of them are scams. Even the ones that are accredited(U phoenix for example), are looked down on because of other practices.
That being said, If you're in your late 20s or 30s, and need a degree and have appropriate experience and are applying for a position that requires a nominal degree, these can be very beneficial.
However if you can find the time there are respected online institutions that can provide a respected and accredited degree in a very short time 18 months or so

These places such as Almeda, Belford, Rochville aren't even universities. Rochville for example, blatantly advertises "No studies, no attendance, no waiting, no examinations," and "Order now and get your degree in five days for as little as $199!". That's pretty easy to see through.
Other unaccredited "universities" will make you do a little bit of work. Kennedy-Western University (a/k/a Warren National University) was part of a Senate Investigation titled "Federal Employees Have Obtained Degrees from Diploma Mills and Other Unaccredited Schools, Some at Government Expense." The "classes" were one open-book, multiple-choice test for each class.
You can easily verify a schools accreditation at: http://www.chea.org/search/default.asp
Even if they claim to be accredited, they can also make up an accrediting agency while they are at it.

brick college do something similar called an Honorary degree to ultra self made people
brick college also let professionals with no degree lecture parttime in their field. A cinematographer, for example, with just a HS diploma and 20 years experience might teach at USC or NYU but only camera work and only parttime.

There are legit accredited universities that offer credit for life experiences. Just a few examples:
Empire State College in New York for their Masters in Business Administration ( MBA ), Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center in California for their Masters of Arts ( MA ) in Human Science, Masters of Arts ( MA ) in Psychology, Ph.D. in Human Science and Ph.D. in Psychology, Goddard College in Vermont for their MA in Psychology and Counseling and Master of Fine Arts ( MFA ) in Creative Writing , etc.
