I am a very good speller but I seem to have a problem with putting sentences together to where they will make sense. I went to a private school all of my life and they over emphasized math but didn't explain english very well. They made the students do alot of spelling exercises and that was about it. I would appreciate any advice on how to improve my grammar because I missed out on learning much about it in school.

I won't go into details about the school itself, but it was not a good school. I tried to transfer to a public school when I was a sophomore in high school and realized I didn't have any credits, to make a long story short.

After you write (assuming you don't have an immediate deadline), put your work away for a day - or several days - before reviewing it again. Read it and see it it sounds right - then correct it. You might want to consult someone who writes well.

For a while, try writing a sentence as you would speak it - without jargon or slang. While formal written English can be different from spoken English, you may well avoid serious grammatical errors.

Read some of the posts on these boards - you will see that many people have problems with grammar.

Try your local library- they should have books on grammar. Also, about.com has some excellent information on grammar. You could also find a English/Grammar/ESL teacher who might be willing to work with you to improve.
