I am currently asking this question in the baby section but maybe more people will know in Home and Garden.

I have purchased a 2nd hand cot and want to stain it.
What sort of stain will I need and what are some basic tips on getting started - eg hand or machine sand, what type of paper or do i use a stripping agent. Best way to apply?

Thanks for the help :)

Sorry. I mean like a baby cot - cradle. It has some scratches and teething marks. Not sure if I should just restain these areas or do the whole thing ( i'm not particularly fond of the colour).

I'm curious about why in the baby section? I may be off base here but my definition of a cot isn't at all for the general use regarding a baby?

You neglected to say what part you wanted to stain. Is it a wood frame cot? Does it have canvas/cotton duck as the material of the cot?

If the cot is fitted with Canvas/Duck, it may be stitched on?

Stripping the frame would be relatively easy; as most are left natural with some clear coat substance applied. Sanding would work; as would a gel stripper. Obviously if the fabric is stitched on that may be an issue in using anything to STRIP the finish. It might be nice if the fabric was installed with snaps.

If your intent is to stain the fabric, that might be unsuccesful, as most are treated.

One you've cleaned the framework, apply a few coats of Polyeutrethane/Marine Varnish/ Epoxy; etc.

Remember it's for a baby and babies sometimes put their mouth on the railing especially when teething to soothe their gums, Enquire in the paint store as to what is safe to use for baby.
