In my "youth" we counted everything! On the television, we counted the tiny dots. On the telephones, we counted the number of holes in the dial. As we learned the numbers, then we learned the letters that went with them. On the road, we counted cars.
The one thing we were never allowed to count were our FINGERS! There was some sort of a "stigma" that made it embarrasing to use your fingers whilst counting!
Any else remember these things as children?

I think maybe it's an o-c thing, but I still count everything, even if I don' t mean to or need to. When I'm folding laundry, I count washcloths; I count undershirts and briefs; when doing dishes, I count spoons, etc.

Counting used to be a favorite thing for kids to do on car trips (before DVD players, that is!) -- counting cows in a field, churches with steeples, white houses, brick houses, Fords, Chevys, ad infinitum.

I still do it today. I count the squares in a ceiling at the doctor's office. I count the tiles in the floor. I count my steps when I walk to the store and back home. I used to count fence posts along the road, but couldn't keep up with the speed of the car. I count the different animals I see in the mountains when traveling by car. When it was happening here under general answer I used to count the same Harry Potter questions listed in a row or on the same page. Just weird things that most people don't count. I even tried once at the mall to figure out how many people wear glasses by counting them and everyone else at the same time. Gave up when I thought I was going blind.

When I first started learning how to count, I would count any thing and everything that I saw just because I could.

Now I count stuff such as the cars on trains, tiles in the doctors offices and anything else I can find to count. I do it now to pass the time away when I am waiting on something or someone. It helps pass the time away. I don't like watching the clock as then time REALLY slows down to almost a slowww crawl.

Still do...drives me nuts. In my Doctor's waiting room , he used to have a persian-type rug with pointy shapes woven in to the edge. Whilst waiting for my turn to see the doc, I would count these points, then forget which point was number 1, so had to start again. I began to feel I was developing OCD, but then he changed the rug and now I try to make faces out of the abstract designs. (No, he's not a shrink!)
Back to the Q, yes, I used to count cars, even wrote down their numbers, but that was in the days when you had so few cars, that you had loads of time to write them. No chance nowadays.

I had a passion for counting train cars. You know stuck in traffic waiting for the train to go by. I started counting, and still do that today. My late husband would laugh and say "it never gets old does it." It is funny now because I have a job working doing inventory, so I count all the time.

This isn't exactly counting, but starting as a very young girl, I have always repeated a certain 3 numbers in my head. Usually when I got scared or nervous...

Ya we did. Unfortunately I do rely heavily on my fingers to count. Bad habit....one I never broke. My college math teacher used to tease me that I couldn't pass a test if my fingers were tied.

I was too busy taking everything I could apart...never got it back together again without left over parts..then take apart again, to see where the left over parts went....My parents got somewhat upset when they found me taking apart an antique clock! Hmmmmm...that ended that career! I loved my Erector set, but always had left over screws....all over the floor...step on one of those barefoot and you know where the screw is! I remember being in trouble a lot when I was a kid!
