I'd beam (with high gain) music in reply. Majestic stuff like the theme to Star Trek Deep Space 9 and the title music to the computer game Morrowind. Easy listening stuff, such as "A Touch of Spring" by Purple Motion and "Betrayal in Antara Overture" by David Henry. Pretty stuff like Paul McCartney singing "Let It Be," Rod Stewart singing "Forever Young," and Enya singing "Hope Has a Place."

The signal could have been sent hundreds or thousands of years ago,a reply shouldn't be too dangerous.

The best evidence we have that there is intelligent life out there, is that they have NOT replied to all our messages. This cannot be a coincidence. Best to follow the trend and remain quiet.

..."if" we receive a signal from somewhere "out there", it's going to be a very old signal... perhaps thousands of "light years" old... sure, send an reply...but you future relatives some millenniums from now will have to be there for the response.

Carl Sagan once said we should really think about wheter or not we should answer to a message from another civilization because we cannot possibly know what their intentions are. But our radiosignals have reached about 15000 stars so far so if they are out there, and if they are looking, they know about us.

Of course -why ?

If they are contacting us they will be more advanced and could wipe us out anytime if they wished to do so.

Anyway - dont need to go off the planet - alien forms are all around were not clever enough not advanced enough to communicate -were like cavemen in comparision.
Your question demonstrates that. (no offence)

All we have to do is signal. I do not find any great problem in that.

Yes, because it would have been sent many years ago. It would take all that time to reach us.
