I am pretty confident that its just a myth.
An interesting note, the movie Donnie Darko uses the story which takes place in Virginia.

It is an Urban Myth to my knoweledge, however it is common knoweledge that all myth had a standing at one point in fact, so it is elusive to imagine this inate creature.
