This may be a ridiculous question, but how do you use baby powder on a newborn?

My mother tells me I should be using it, but to me, I would think it would dry out their skin?

At the moment, I use baby wipes during every nappy change and use a nappy cream after the bath on the groin/bottom and a baby moisturiser on the rest of the body, isn't this enough?

Why would I need to use it and how would it be used?

ok I had this same question back when I was a new mom!

When you use it, be sure to lightly sprinkle the area, but don't squeeze the bottle, it will puff small particles out that aren't good for your baby to inhale.
I rub the baby powder in.

It's used to help aborb some of the pee, and kinda help protect the baby from urine sitting directly on the skin. You shouldn't use baby powder if the baby has diaper rash.

I think what you are using is best. diaper cream, and baby mositurizer. I think this is enough- don't use powder. I prefer creams as well.

Lots of people use it just because of the smell. It smells nice and is a refreshener. It seems like it would dry out their skin too, but it doesn't.

There are no stupid questions when your a new mommy, it's best to ask if you don't know rather then do something wrong & jeapordize your baby. I like to ask on Yahoo Answers too so I don't feel so stupid in "real life" .. like to my mom or doctor. Good luck!

you don't need baby powder on their bottom/private parts but it can help to absorb moisture off their skin from wee and sweat, so it may be helpful in summer.

If you are changing them frequently enough then you shouldn't really even need nappy cream either unless they have nappy rash. I think Lucas' Paw Paw cream works best on little bottoms.
Moisturiser is good though to help keep their new skin hydrated and it smells pretty too!

Congrats on bubs and keep doing what you're doing. Your the mum now so you know best!

Ive only used it once on my 4 month old - he had a little bit of a heat rash on his tummy so put a little on there just to keep the area dry.
I havent had the need to use it for anything else - its not necessary. My bub very very rarely gets nappy rash, and when he does its the tiniest bit of redness that i put bepanthan nappy rash cream on straight away until it resolves itself. I dont really like the idea of putting too many things on bub - im paranoid he may have a reaction to it - first time mum, can you tell lol!!

You don't need to use it. I never have. A good cleaning after each diaper and some loving care with a little diaper cream as needed and the baby will be fine.

I not only see no need for the powder, I don't like having all that very fine dust where it can get into the baby's airways.

ok for one, what the hell is nappy cream? lol
and u dont have to use baby powder...i never did...
however, it is supposed to help and prevent diaper rash...

if ur child ever gets a diaper rash just go buy corn startch...it works better than any cream out there...i didnt believe it til my ex's mom made me try it when my son had a bad rash..worked like a charm!
if u do want to use baby powder, u just sprinkle a little bit on their bottom...be careful not to use too much bc if it gets in the baby's face it could inhale the powder and choke...

good luck with everything and have a wonderful day! congrats on the little one (*)_(*)

We were informed on the well-being facility that toddler powder is risky on newborns because the truly high quality powder can get into their lungs. We not in any respect used it even as they were newborns and they did basically high quality with toddler wipes and a diaper change each 3 hours in the course of the day (no variations in one day till they awoke crying because of a poopy diaper).

Basically, it was and is used to help protect the baby's butt. Way back in the day destin and A & D ointment, etc. was not readily available to the average person, but baby powder was and it was relatively cheap. I used it occasionally because it smells nice. I put it on butts and armpits, I also used the cornstarch powder versus the talcum powder. It doesn't dry skin out (don't know how it doesn't but it doesn't). All in all it is a personal preference.

Nowadays powder is not recommended due to the small particles that are air borne around the infant and can be ingested into their respiratory tract causing respiratory distress or infection.
Powder used to be used to help prevent diaper rash. It is no longer needed as we have wonderful barrier creams to do this job much more efficiently.
Tell Mom it's a new day and powder is considered a danger to her precious Grandbaby.

I use baby powder with added cornstarch when I change my daughters nappy to stop nappy rash. I use to use the nappy rash cream but it didn't help it made her nappy rash worse. You don't have to use it if you feel you don't need to but if you do you put it on your hand and then rub it on their skin

maybe after bathtime use the powder on the skin but if your using diaper cream that is all you need for that area some people would rather powder over the creams like my husband but that is your personal choice
