It depends on what aspect of oz you're talking about?

Our finances seem better due to the us being unstable and the downfall of the dollar so the oz dollar has consequently gone up.

Australia has definately got worse for me and my family,my sister was fired from her job last month no reason given, she consulted a lawyer but was told because of the new govt policies she couldnt do anything about it and someone else was given her job who had been gunning for it for months.

For me personally I've watched the country that ive loved all my life turn into a split nation of anglos vs non anglos ,with people bashing the crap out of each other at cronulla, and have had to endure listening to the most racist crap to ever hit the radios and papers ,for the first time in my life i felt like I didnt belong in my own country and thought i would have to leave, howard started that "us vs them" energy in this country and divided this country in the last ten years.I had never felt that ever growing up.

History will say that under Mr Howard, Australia became one of the most prosperous Nations on the Planet. Lower interest rates, more people working and a fairer system for all Australians. Differing Political views will debate this but, fact is fact. Even Peter Beattie declared that Mr Howard was one of the fairest Politicians he had worked with. John Howard has left Australia in a far better condition than when he took over in 96. It's up to Mr Rudd now to improve it further. That's the challenge to any newly elected PM.

a lot worse; at one time you are able to get 2 O tiers, learn on the job, and then get an outstanding occupation / earnings. Now, the inflow of foreigners who will artwork cost effectively, potential you'd be on the minimum salary for evermore. Plus, the upward push of people with valueless degrees has also placed rigidity on the operating classification from above - wherein a level will change into the minimum requirement for clerking etc. of route, there are this kind of huge quantity of different factors that one may be right here all day - societies with a lot extra occurrence of casual violence than Britain (traditionally) have rubbed off on us negatively even as they arrive to stay right here. to call yet basically another element. the overall lack of manners and appreciate for others is a significant change too.

Like nearly every country in the developed world the economy has boomed. You could have had a retard in charge and the economy would have prospered still. Only the US seemed to go backwards. It wasnt Howards great policies but more a worldwide trend that saw nearly all countries prosper.

As for the reputation of Australians abroad, they have nose-dived rapidly in the last decade. Idiotic things like openly infuriating muslims, participating in an unjustified invasion of Iraq and supporting it even till today, despite the fact it was invaded on a lie, openly admitted by Bush. Never seen so many warnings saying Australians are not advised to travel to bla bla bla...Howard has created hostile relations with our neighbours and that flows through to Australian's traveling abroad. When Australians say they are New Zealanders abroad because they want to avoid the hatred shown for Australians because of Howard, then things are definitely worse

of course it has gotten better, at least we were in the black , now that labor has been voted in we will probably return to being in debt look at the states especially NSW's the labor state govt has wasted tax payers money the hospitals, public transport are all f@#$%d and now that people have voted the labor party into federal govt we are well and truely screwed . Get ready to line up at centrelink for the dole because the unemployment line is starting to get longer. Welcome to the future and the change that some of you decided we needed .

Just ask how many people can afford to buy a home and how many little people got crushed under the industrial relations laws ,the closure of so many mental health facilities, the fantastic water initiatives they have put in place(not) and the fact that Aboriginal reconciliation has been put back 20yrs.
So it has got worse we have had the biggest gas and mining boom for years so our economy should be booming and Howard can't take credit for that.

Have you noticed how much prices of everything has gone up over the last couple of years? housing has just skyrocketed but it is still a good thing that interest stayed LOWER that with labor . . anyways . .

What about now? lets make predictions. Its the younger voters that have stuffed up the future for themselves. They were sucked into the myspace advertising, going on rove?? We all knew the election would be won or lost depending on the gullable under 30's

I am interested to see the replies to this as my partner swears Oz is better than UK in every way....I lived in Adelaide (of all places) for a year two years ago and I hated it...it seemed small minded, racist and sexist...no offence...it is a beautiful country...but SOOO hot! I dont think it's healthy for white people to live in heat like that...we weren't made for it were we? I could hardly stand the heat...and it rained once in a year. EDIT....other answers have reminded me of how scary I found the whole water shortage thing...it seemed like no one was doing anything...and in S.A. it was/is bad...I felt insecure there with all the water scares..and yet I would see my stupid neighbours watering their roses...ROSES! In Adelaide...I felt like they should ban no indigenous plants and only allow Australian native ones....
