The needle has little surface area and does not have much surface for the water to upthrust against.
The ton of ice however, has a big bottom, so there is more water pushing up against it creating more upthrust which holds it up.
Same as how a big boat doesnt sink.

Would that be ton or tonne?
The key is VOLUME
you have the weight of each object
The needle will displace a very tiny amount of water
and by the time that it is fully immersed it will not have displaced enough water to support it's weight & sinks
The ton of ice also displaces water, but by the time it gets to about 9/10th's submersed the water displaced equals a ton
so it floats with 10% showing above the surface
To adress another "answer"
All ice floats as water EXPANDS at about 4 degrees C

Because the metal is denser than the water, and ice is less dense than water.

its density. the atoms/molecules of the needla are packed more tightly 2gether than those of ice.
thus ice is less dense than the material the needle is made of(which, generally, is steel)hope it helped

ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE.
the force is F=V*d*g
where v is volume of the immersed portion of object,d is the density of the fluid,g is acc due to gravity.

the density of water is 1.00 per g/ml and ice floats in water because its density is 0.92 per g/ml that is slightly less that water. An 0.5g needle's density is more than that of water density therefore the reason it sinks immediately

Have you heard of Archimedes, and density? The density of ice is 0,8g/cm3 and the iron's 7,8g/cm3, and water's 0,998 g/cm3. It means ice is lighter than water, so it floats, and iron,as most of the metals(except Natrium) is havyer than water, so it sinks instantly.

well umm, actually i don't believe frozen water is less dense than liquid water. when water freezes it also crystallizes and molecules of air get caught in the latices, i think.
edit: i'm sorry that's wrong, it's less dense because the formation of crystal latices increase it's volume by about 9%, it has nothing to do with air molecules.

Its all due to specific gravity, density. That's it
