My car started run really rough about a month back and I found out that my wife didn't change the oil on the car and the dipstick was dry. I took the car in immediately and had the oil, for lack of a better word, changed. The car runs better but stick seems a little rough when idle. Is there anything I can put into the engine to help with any damage that the engine might have recieved during the time it was running dry? Thanks in advance.

edit:

still seems a little rough - not "stick"

The car had a basic oil/filter change nothing else. I place in some engine treatment but I am wondering if there is anything else I can put in it. I really need this car to last at least 3 months but would like to shoot for 1 yr (no more).

The dip stick was dry. I had to sign a statement from the oil change place stating that I knew it was dry. The temp is ok (although I do have a small radiator leak) and the oil level has been good since I replaced it. If this is something I am going to have to deal with than I'm o.k. with it but if there is something I can add to it to help decrease the friction I would like to try and see if it works.

This is going to suck...

BUT any engine damaged that has occurred do to lack of oil (or even the presence of dirty oil) is done. It's kind of like your skin...When you got that sunburn when you were 8 the damage was already done...Unless you replace all of the parts.

However, to minimalize the damage I would take it back in for a synthetic (like Mobil One) change. It can't reverse the damage, but synthetic WILL reduce any further wear and/or gumming. The best part? Synthetic only needs to be changed every 6-10K miles in a vehicle with less than 100K on it (still every 5-7K at 100K+).

A hot engine has little to do with oil levels...generally a coolant/radiator issue. Oil reduces friction, not temperature (overall of course, a siezed engine WILL be ultra hot, but not day to day driving)...

For anyone reading...never EVER put synthetic in a vehicle with less than 10,000 miles on it. E-V-E-R.

PS...if your wife really did run it dry the engine would've seized and you'd be screwed. So don't be mean...

Hi,
Normally there is some oil consumed by the engine between the specified time for oil changes. But a dry dip stick is not what one would expect. If the oil has not been changed for long it would look a lot darker than new oil and the level would be around 1/2 way or more between max limit and dry. Check to ensure that you do not have an oil leak. Also - check if the oil filter has been serviced / replaced as per recommendations of the manufacturer.

Do check your dashboard temp gauge to see if your vehicle ir running hotter than normal ( near or on the red zone )

You now have a worn out engine, so treat it like one, there are some oils that are marketed at name brand stores as being designed for older engines.
The best indicator of an engine's condition is a compression test, if you wish to pay a couple of hundred dollars for one or do it your self for far less, just follow instructions carefully so you do not mess up the readings.
There is no fix for this other than replacing the engine.

call the save and performance them grant and verify the oil to ensure if it leaks out. they'd have you ever tow the vehicle in, do notcontinual without OIL! both way, if the engine blows, then they're accountable to interchange the engine, do no longer be confident to settle for a used junkyard engine, ask for a sparkling engine with a three three hundred and sixty 5 days 100k mile assure in writing. (Jasper engine will do). in case you position any oil contained in the vehicle, and it leaks by using a foul oil filter out gasket then you would void any probability of having a sparkling engine, they're going to say that you knowingly drove a vehicle leaking oil and not in any respect do something for you. If i have been you, i could blow the engine and enable them grant you with a condo till the hot engine receives put in. in case you used a couple of minutes Lube, then call the realm rep and record a criticism so it truly is recorded and documented. Get a fact from the co worker pointing out the engine had no oil once you arrived on the well-being facility. Do in spite of it takes, yet you do not pay a dime for something, consisting of the tow. solid success......

Do you know if they got any oil out of it and if so you might just try and change the oil again there really isn't any thing to stop wear on the engine you could buy some time by using engine restore.

If you have signs of wear like excessive oil consumption or blue smoke from the exhaust or you can smell oil burning out of the exhaust. You could try running a 50 weight oil.

Any noise coming out of engine? Slick 50 would be a good bet at this time.

There's a variety of Redex products to clean the top end of the engine, e.g. petrol additive and injector cleaner. Did you change the oil filter? http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/categorydisplay_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_categoryId_58758

Good God--get to a shop and get a tune up--Stop whining and get the air and the gas filter changed--if you want a car--then take care of it.
