I don't decorate until 14 days before Christmas.
I always get a real tree and decorate it with gold balls & plain white lights. I also twine some red outdoor lights around the conifer in my garden. Also a (real) wreath on the front door, and some traditional brass ornaments along the mantelpiece with tartan stockings at either end. I pin some red ribbon to the walls, and hang the Christmas cards from them. Plenty of candles.

Not many in my street do it, and I can't afford a lot either, but I have a rope light Christmas tree in the window facing out, and I have flashing colourful icicle lights hanging around the gutters of my house. I only have them turned on between 8pm and 11pm to keep the power costs down.
I have a large wreath on my front door.
My car is decorated with tinsel as well.

Front room - tree, etc.
Dining room - dinner in there so has to be decorated really
and the hallway bit in between.
We hang up a climbing Santa, but no lights. Where I live, they'd get nicked.

A tree, a few garlands and tinsel and that's it. Don't do the garden because everyone else down my street does it and I'm not a sheep! Plus, I can't afford the electric!

This year, I will have about 30,000 lights (most of them are LEDs) on computerized controls synchronized to music.
We will show from Dec 1st to Dec 31st. Last year, our power bill only went up about $1 a day for all the lights we had on.

More than the average person but not too tacky as to cover everywhere. I have 5 children and run a playgroup from my home so it is all basically for the children.
