I asked this yesterday but I'm sure there are more good answers to be heard.

This is not about the actual time the oil runs out, nor about any particular oil reserve. When ALL the oil on this planet runs out WHERE would be seeing the least human disaster and industrial shutdown?

Brazil has already converted half of it economy to bio fuels and has shown the sugar cane works much better than corn. Probably other tropical plants will also work well so many tropical countries that are not doing well now may prosper. If the oil last long enough high tech countries will adapt and find new technologies, and there will still be coal and oil shale in the US. The countries that now depend on oil sales to support their economies will suffer the most except Bahrain which is turning itself into a tourist attraction.

The oil reserve only applies to that which is available that can be removed at current prices. As prices increase, the reserve increases. You can never run out. It will just become too expensive to drill. If that happens in the near future, countries like France that use something like 70% nuclear will be impacted least. The only exception would be those countries that rely on human labor and that would be primarily the third world. I wouldn't say it wouldn't impact their future prosperity but at least they are used to doing without.

The most undeveloped nations will be the least effected. Industrialized society is globally critically entwined. There would be no human on the planet not effected. It will be difficult to give up computers, television, eyeglasses, air travel, medicines, toys and electronics, magazines, bananas and other imported foods, etc. Everything everywhere, all manufacturing processes, all parts, all raw ores and material, all distribution systems, all shipping, machinery, and all labor support systems are currently ultimately dependent upon oil. Civilization as we know it does not survive without oil unless we figure out other feasible energy solutions.
