I am looking for a good motorcycle to buy to learn how to ride. I also plan on taking riding classes as well. I was told a R6 would be a good choice for a first bike. I just want to get a feel from other people to see if anyone agrees or has other choices. I know nothing about motorcycles, I am 6 feet even and weigh approx 250.

I would strongly suggest starting off with a 250cc to 500cc motorcycle with as little fairing as possible.

The R6 is way too much, it is designed to be ridden quickly, a learner would struggle to cope with it – start with something less powerful and focussed, learn the techniques and move up to an R6 or CBR600RR, there are many options, look at 250s or larger single cylinder bikes.

That all depends, have you ever rode a bike of any kind? If not try a ATV. You do have 1 thing going right to start... YAMAHA...I have never heard of a YZF-R6 but I have been a little out of touch with new bikes But I am sure that a good Yamaha sales person could get you going in the right direction.. I know it isn't excalty the answer you wanted but thats my opoinon.(oops i think I spelled that wrong) GOOD LUCK!

just look at the milder 600 class bikes. stay away from the r6 and other high end ones The cbr600rr or the other 600 than the yzfr6 that yamaha has and you will be happy for a good while on it.

R6's are fairly powerful for a beginner. However, if you feel confident in your abilities go ahead.

However, I will suggest you get a roll cage if this is your first riding experience (or you want to stunt.)

As usual, always wear protective gear.

If you want speed, I would go with Suzuki. If you want nice looking bike, Yamaha and of course the Honda for reliability (not always).
