Lego, a tamagotchi, a make-your-own set, a sciencey thing like one of those sets with experiments . or maybe some rollerskates, heelys or t-shirts. Happy X-mas!! :-)

Legos! especially if there's no baby in the house to choke on them. Lincoln Logs are another builder's tool. A kit where you can put something together and then paint it is an idea. You could see if there's a "Tuesday Morning" store in your area, and there you'll see plenty of quality toys, many german-made wood toys, that are discounted to excellent prices. As an extra, maybe an activity book with mazes, games etc in there.

A couple of ideas for you:

LEGOs. The LEGO City series is geared towards kids 6-12. They're a little easier to put together than some of the more advanced LEGOs, making for easy play.

(There's more on the LEGO site, which doesn't seem to be working right now.)

The Transformers voice-changing mask is pretty cool.

A remote-control car. (Just make sure you buy one with a battery charger, or you'll go through batteries like crazy!)

A Build-a-Dino ( http://www.buildadino.com )

An activity book. Chicken Socks makes an activity book that turns into a castle playset.

Hot Wheels makes these really cool Monster Jam monster trucks. They come in all different sizes and lots of interesting themes. Here's a few example; you'll probably find a bigger selection in-store.

Building blocks...definately. My boy loves them. They come in a huge range from wooden ones (still the old time fav) to lego types (age appropriate ones). And also a variety of price ranges. Blocks are fun, good for creative play, sharing and so on...

The most popular toy for boys, I believe, is a ball. Pretty much any kind. My kids (a boy and a girl) both liked soccer balls and basketballs. My son also liked getting footballs and baseballs. My daughter liked getting volleyballs and softballs. It's inexpensive, timeless and lasts a long time. My son still uses one of the basketballs we got for him when he was in middle school - he's 26 now.
