Your PC is still useful for internet, office applications, downloading, and MP3 playing. Your decision to upgrade RAM was a wise move. Your problem could just be due to insertion of a new RAM module on a dirty RAM slot. Try cleaning the slot with a small paint brush then reseating the RAM module twice before locking in place. You could also try interchanging the modules on their slots. Worked for me before.
1Gb RAM plus a dedicated graphics card would do wonders to that PC.

Buy a whole new computer. The price would be better than upgrading.

if it is a constant beep it mean there is no ram or the ram may be damaged or may be in the wrong slot.
