Def Leppard originally was called Deaf Leopard and the spelling was intentionally changed.
From the FAQ at www.defleppard.com:
1. How did the band get their name?
Joe Elliott came up with the name DEAF LEOPARD for his imaginary band when he was still in school. When he joined the band that was called ATOMIC MASS at the time, they decided to change it into DEAF LEOPARD, and then later changed the spelling to DEF LEPPARD
