I;m thinking about replacing my timing belt. I looked over many step by step manuels. One manuel said to remove the spark plugs. What is the purpose of removing the spark plugs and is it necessary?

Also, you'll find that manually advancng the motor will be a lot easier with the plugs out and no compression to work against.

If you do not remove the plugs at first and are lucky that things have not move around on you when you go to replace the belt no problem. But in order to line the dots up it is easier to move the cam and crank when needed if the plugs are out.

You want to remove the spark plugs for the simple fact it`s something more in the way, somthing more that can break and you`ll have to replace, also when you pull them out you can see better if you need to replace them.
