How about no matter how bad a time you think this is now, you're still going to call it the good old days when your old.

In the story, there is also the lesson about laziness. Rip Van Winkle is amiable, but he is also lazy and doesn't do the work he should do to keep his farm in good condition. He goes into the mountains to escape his scolding wife and the work he should be doing.
There is also the theme of radical change in the midst of continuity. A new nation is before him with unfamiliar faces, but the Catskills are the same; nature is the same despite the changes he sees.

Don't actually think I can pin down the theme. Maybe it's a kinda you can't go home again type of thing. Rip goes off to the mountains to basically escape his ever scolding wife and ends up sleeping for twenty years. When he awakes, the world he knew is gone and things have changed. His kids are grown, his wife dead, old friends are long since gone, a new nation has been formed. His home town is no longer the home he remembers. It's really like the old saying says, you can't go home again.
