Certainly the Plagues of the 14th century were pretty bad. Nearly 1/3 of Europe died in the mid-1300s.
I always thought that the Council of Nicea caused, and is still causing more suffering, death, and hatred than any other event in the Western world. That was the council called by Emperor Constantine and it determined most of the principles of Christianity.
It took the gentle message of love that the Carpenter taught, and turned it into the strict, dogmatic theocracy that the Church (Catholic, at least) is today. It was this Council that blamed the Jews for Christ's death (thus allowing the Holocaust) it excluded women from the Church's heirarchy, and set the "for us or against us" philosophy that led to the Crusades and the hatred of Islam that still exists today.
If anything could be "the worst" event, I'd have to point to the Nicean Council.

The Plague, also known as 'The Black Death.'
The Black Death was responsible for the deaths of untold millions and surpasses that of the victims of the Holocaust or the one man that was crucified at the crucifixion.
