Think of "warm" colors as being closer to the red and "cool" colors as being closer to the blue.

Looking at a color wheel, you can, clearly, see that orange is on the "warm" side and green tends to be "cool."

Yellow could go either way, depending on whether red is added, or blue. Purple, also, can go either way, depending on the addition of more red or more blue.

Regarding brown, it is usually made by adding blue to it opposite color, orange. The addition of opposite colors on the wheel tend to "dull" the color. Since brown starts off as orange, I would call it a warm color. If you started with blue, and added some orange pigment, you would get a kind of "slate" color, which is, decidedly "cool."

Brown is a warm color. The warm colors are red, yellow, orange. The cool colors are blue, green and purple. Brown is made by mixing red and green, so if you use more red, the brown will be warmer. If you use a lot of green, the brown will be a lot cooler.

Here are some websites to visit, two for the fun of seeing what they have for the color wheel, one for the education.

This is a hard question to answer and you'll probably get a bunch of different answers. From what I've learned, it depends.
you can have two browns next to each other, one cooler one warmer, if a brown is next to a red it's the cooler color if it's next to a blue it's a warmer color.
Your assignment is kind of easy if you think of it simply. If you have a simple color pallet, Red, blue, yellow (this is called a triad-color pallet) then it's clear which is warm and which is cool.
If your brown is red-ish it's definatly a warm color, when related to greens blues or even yellow.

The definition of a warm color is that it falls more to the red/yellow part of the spectrum than the blue/violet end.

Brown is a mixture of orange and green. Green is a mixture of blue and yellow. Orange is a mixture of yellow and red. 3 yellow/reds vs 1 blue/violet. WARM.

When you have a black and white photo and you want to warm it up, you put it in sepia (brown) dye. If you want to cool it down, you put it in a blue dye.

Brown = Warm.

Brown is a warm neutral color that can stimulate the appetite. It is found extensively in nature in both living and non-living materials.
