Yes, have lights on if you can, especially for a movie with rapidly changing light levels (dark to light to dark quickly; PC monitor would have less of this problem):

But one of the answers in the second link says this is a myth!

According to these experts from Canada, you should ignore your mom, watch TV in a dark room, and sit close to it if you feel like it:

There you have it, some expert opinion!

Oh, wait, Canadian Association of Optometrists disagree.

So, forget what I just said; don't watch TV in the dark, and don't sit too close to it either:

I would recommend this test to see how fatigued/strained your eyes are: Go to mirror, look at the corners of your eyes as you turn your head side-to-side. If you see big red bloody veins, it's time for your eyes to get some rest. Maybe do this now before watching too much TV so you know how your veins look without eye fatigue. They will still be there, but may look much more innocent.

If you see veins coming out to the center of your eyes... Whoa! Stop whatever you are doing, and go to sleep, man!

I know this; I get bloody eyes when I'm awake overnight in front of the monitor (and it's LCD monitor, with no flicker, but I still get bloody eyes). I quite probably don't blink enough, and I rarely if ever look away from the monitor...

(I just took a break and looked away right now, for a few seconds)

The laptop I is use has an option for using dual monitors. Without turning it on, it wouldn't work. So there is settings that you'll have to adjust. I think you'll be disappointed with using your TV as a monitor. Many webpages and fonts will be screwed up since your TV is no match for a computer monitor.

it is better to have a light on because if you don't your eyes are trying to adjust to two different levels of light.
