I need to buy a new laptop battery for my Dell Inspiron 9300 and the batteries on the Dell website are expensive and was wondering if there was another reliable website where I can purchase a new battery and adapter. And how do you know if a website really does sell OEM parts?

I've had my laptop for about 4-5 years now so the warranty on my laptop has expired. Dell only covers batteries for 1 year.

The Dell web site.

Aftermarket batteries have a tendency of catching fire because they are made cheaper and with less attention paid to safety so stay the f*** away from them.

Even well made batteries have been known to catch fire but the batteries that Dell recalled were pretty damn safe compared with aftermarket junk.

You'll also run the risk of buying a dead battery no matter where you buy it from since a lot of 'new' batteries are 'new' old stock and Li-Ion batteries age even when they are in storage.

The best place to buy laptop batteries is http://SafeBatteries.com because of the advanced li-ion cells (Panasonic NNP) used in the Max Capacity brand of laptop batteries they sell.

A typical 6 cell battery made by Dell rates at 5200mAh/56Wh and uses decent cells from Sony, Samsung and LG. All of these major manufactures incorporate new technology into their designs which increase power capacity and service life from previous generations. A battery made with these cells would be expected to last about 600 charging cycles or 2 years with good battery life maintained for a long period.
The cheaper off brands use generic cells that only rate at 4400mAh/47Wh and will only last 300 charging cycles or about 1 year. These cells also lack the newest safety feature and would not pass UL1642 certification. A general rule of thumb is if the battery is less $50-60 expect 1-1/2 years of service life and 1 1/2 to 2 hours of runtime for your laptop for the first 6 months. After that service life and run time will fall off a cliff.

Basically, those eye popping low prices are achieved by stripping out service life, power capacity, and safety features.

Also, note that laptop batteries are like produce and the cells degrade over time even if they are not used. A battery that sits in a warehouse waiting to be sold will have lost around 30% of both service life and capacity. This is the case with most batteries that are sold on Amazon and eBay and are under 30 bucks. The older stock is sold at a steep discount because they are going bad.

One of the best batteries that I have run across is made by Max Capacity. Our IT dept uses them and it basically how I found out the information a stated here. The batteries they make use cells made by Panasonic and are rated at 5800mAh/63Wh or more. That equated to almost 50% more runtime than a 4400mAh cell and they last about 700-800 charging cycles or about 3 years. They basically outperform and outlast even the OEM.

Examples of these batteries can be found at http://SafeBatteries.com and typically cost ~ $70-$80 bucks.

Look for UpStart Battery. They have a lifetime warranty. To read about how the battery industry works, go check out their website. In a nutshell, almost all laptop batteries for original OEMs come from a few factories in china that are NOT owned by the brands - they are their own companies with production contracts. It is the same for Sony, HP, especially Dell - they outsource everything.

So, this isn't a problem, but the lowest rent replacement batteries are made by the other thousands of tiny battery companies in China that fill battery packs with poor quality cells that have usually been rejects from the big cell makers. These are the batteries that sell on ebay for $40. I real, quality battery, whether it is an original Dell, an UpStart, or some other quality brand will cost you about double that, depending upon the size of the battery (number of cells inside the pack)

UpStart is the only replacement brand that buys exclusivly from OEM factories. They don't brand it "Dell", so they don't pay royalties.

But personally, I just like not having to worry about warranties.
