Is Krafla the one that began flowing lava and ash toward the cities? If so--the people stopped the flows by pumping water from the ocean onto them which cooled them and solidified them. Even so--some of the flows reached into the edges of some of the towns and past the ends of the towns to reach the seas edge. The solidified flows created a lot of new land and changed the shapes of some of the harbors.
