I oftentimes wear a tuxedo as uniform, and my friends insist that I unbutton the bottom button of my 3-button vest/waistcoat. I think it looks odd... the buttons are too close together, and for attire as formal as a tux, the "casualness" of unbuttoning seems out of place. Is there a right way to button a vest, and are there any sources to back this up either way? Thanks!

I've not found many vests/waistcoats that are only three button unless they are super formal style- ie full dress white tie - then a three button remaining fastened is usual.
Where do you wear a tuxedo as a uniform? Are you a waiter or maitre 'd?
