I'm looking at setting up a 300+ gallon aquarium for amazon stingrays and was wondering if I could get away with a school of tetra's in with them. My thinking is that with them being bottom feeders, the tetras might be okay given enough cover to bed down in at night....

Any thoughts?

Thank you guys for all the answers. I'll probably end up giving it a try just to add a little color to such a big tank....if I have to replace a fish or two from time to time, I can probably live with that.

Kinda tough to choose a best answer on this one, so I'll probably leave it up to the voters.

Thanks again

The rays and tetras would do okay together as long as they stay away from the ray. I have had rays in the past. I had a 300 gallon Amazon tank. I had a Red tailed Catfish, 2 Pacu, a Pleco, and 2 Stingrays. The rays ate shrimp and frozen foods.
I had the rays in a 55 gallon tank first. they were with alot of small fish, but they never ate any. Good Luck, and I hope this helps.

Its not so much that the stingray is agressive(they are peaceful) but almost any fish will eat another fish that fits in its mouth. Its definitly not impossible for the stingray to eat the tetras, but that depends on the amount of hiding places. If you want to risk it, then maybe you should add a few tetras.

First and for most not in any respect forget that a Smallmouth Bass is puzzling stressed to kill and devour crawdads. he will attack them at any chance. i'm going with small jigs with a pink meat trailer. A plastic craw imitation Texas rigged works. Tubes also artwork o.k. too. After that a minnow type jerk bait will also fill the bill. i do no longer use rattle traps as those bait will be thrown certainly by Mr. Airborne Smallie. Use mild line, Smallies are line delicate. Have an miraculous time.

You're absolutely right... Stingrays, with their bottom facing mouths, would have a lot of difficulty eating a Tetra and would much prefer some shrimp, crabs, or worms to eat... You should have no problem at all, and it sounds like you know what you're doing, so the best of luck to you!

they'll eat them.
they don't look it, but they're efficient predators. They'll suddenly "jump" on fish.
