I only have 20% left on my C drive. Should I use "defragment"? What would happen if I did that? Would lose some files?

No defraging will only put the files in the propper place while also sorting out the free space which means it won't remove any files but it will give more space especially if you have never defraged.

Defraging will just arrange the files in your hard disk in a way that will place most read data into the first blocks and will group fragments of data which belongs to the same file so that it will perform faster.

Your post is misleading and I will also assume that you might want some tools to free up more space in your hard disk. Aside from letting the computer delete files for you, delete manually files you do not need or have no further need in the future. Also, empty your recycle bin. You may also opt using Disk Cleanup.

Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup

In disk cleanup, old and temporary files will be deleted.

No, you won't lose anything. When you first go to defrag click on analyze. Your computer will function better after defrag. I do disk clean up and defrag once a week. Good luck.

No - you will not loose your files - you need at least 15% to defrag.
I would seriously recommend an external hard drive to store your files on and to give you more room on your C drive.

I'd suggest buying a 2nd drive, then move all stuff like music/movies etc to that, then defrag.
