If so, can you tell me a little something (maybe just one or two sentances) about their coming about in your life?

I grew up in NYC, pre polio vaccine. Every summer, if any family could *possibly* afford it, the mom took the children out of the city during the "polio season" to someplace healthier. We'd see Dad on the weekend or not at all, from the time school let out at the end of June, until it started up again right after Labor Day.
There was a family on our block, nice people with children our age, whom my parents ordinarily would have encouraged us to be friends with, but we were told to avoid them completely because the little girl (my age) had had polio. She had fully recovered and there was nothing visibly wrong with her! Yet I was expected to cross the street to avoid her. Eventually the family moved, I assume so the kids could have a 'fresh start'.
Everyone I knew lived in terror of polio--there was no preventing it, it could kill or cripple little children, and there was no cure. The development of the Salk vaccine was like the development of penicillin, the first antibiotic; it was a modern-day miracle. It seemed almost too good to be true.
