Livelihood Education is that which provides for knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) specifically intended to have a direct transference to an occupation or vocation and to activities of daily living (such as personal finance).

An example might be learning to lay a brick wall. Someone employed as a bricklayer doesn't necessarily need to know the history of bricks or the physics of how much weight a certain wall will hold; the vocational training is simply "how to".

Academic education provides for the "why" of various things and is the foundation of a liberal arts higher education. An example would be sociology - the study of which doesn't have a direct application to any single vocation but instead is the study of "why" groups of people behave the way they do.

Livelihood education is the main reason most people go to college. They simply want to earn more money. Unfortunately, many miss the dual nature of education and elect an academic study when their objective demands a vocational study.

It's very possible to do both but usually in separate programs.
