I have never seen anything like this in my lifetime as far as parity in NCAA football is concerned, but I got to say, Iove the way this season has gone. My biggest problem with college football was that ranked teams would regularly win by a 40 point margin or more against unranked opponents, but that has been the exception rather than the rule this year. If this trend continues next season, and the one after, then I think there does not need to be a playoff system introduced. I don't think one can blame this crazy season of upsets on the BCS computer, which by the way I believe is doing a great job this year, but on a greater balance in the recruiting pool thanks to new restrictions on the number of scholarships available to each school. This helps spread the high school talent more evenly among college teams, which results in the wildly entertaining parity of this season. Let's see if this trend continues, because if it does, it will eliminate the need for a playoff system. If things revert back to the way they were, however, I will argue for a playoff system of a conference champion from each conference, and then two or four wild card teams. I really don't think this would take, even though it makes sense, because there is a lot of money generated from the dozens of bowl games each year.
Great question, and very interesting answers by everyone above!

If it's necessary to have a playoff system in the NFL, it should also be necessary to have a playoff system in NCAA football. It's no easy task but playoffs is the way to go by pairing all bowl game winners into 16 teams.

College football needs a playoff system to crown a true national champ.

Every team sport needs a postseason tournament to be legit.
Sports with judging are inferior sports.
Settle it on the field at all costs!!!
College basketball is not as good as College football. And think about how great March Madness is. Just imagine how great a college football 16-game playoff would be.....
DIv III does it, Div II does it, Div 1-AA does it....it can and should happen.
$$$ gets in the way.

This season proves more than any that a playoff system IS needed. If Kansas goes undefeated they deserve a shot, but could they beat LSU or Oklahoma or Ohio State. Which one loss team is most deserving of the shot to beat Kansas? Why shouldn't Hawaii get a chance. They haven't beat anybody good but they haven't lost to anybody either. Every other sport the controversy ends with the season.

It could be argued that all these great games were equal to playoff games, but at the end of the season you're still gonna have a big group of teams with the same record and basically one or two of them will go to the national title game simply because they lost earlier in the season rather than later. How much better would this already incredible season be if we took the champs of the big 6 conferences and 2 at large teams and held an 8 team playoff? I think it would be HUGE.

A playoff wouldn't prove who was the best team...it would just prove who won on the field THAT DAY. Is Appalachan State better than Michigan? Of course not...but if they had met in a playoff, Michigan would have been at home.

any team can beat any other team on any given day.
a playoff won't change that. even with a playoff people will claim they could have beat someone else but they did not get in the correct bracket, or a team left out of the playoffs that has victories against teams that are in it. unless the playoff goes to at least 32 teams some teams will be left out that have legitimate complaints.

No, it proves that a playoff is desperately needed, as there are not two teams that are clearly deserving of playing for the national title above everyone else.
