K stands for kilo-
as in Kilogram, which is equal to 1000 grams.
So, normally people use K instead of writing 1000,
It sounds more cool and also saves time in some instances.

Thousand Abbreviation

The SI prefix for 1000 is k, for kilo. This is case-sensitive: k means kilo, K doesn't mean anything.

Just to confuse things, people sometimes use kilo, mega and giga to mean 2^10, 2^20 and 2^30 when they are talking about computers. These are customarily (though not always) abbreviated Ki (case!), Mi and Gi, respectively.

(if this is new to you, you really need to get out more)

K Abbreviation

The "K" comes from the metric term "kilo" which means 1000
i.e. a kilometer means 1000 meters;
a kilogram means 1000grams;
a kiloparsec means 1000parsecs;

kind of like when we use the term "Gee" for a thousand dollars. The "G" comes from the word Grand--i.e. ten grand is ten gees is 10,000 dollars except "kilo" is an official scientific term where "grand" is a colloquial (slang) term--I think it generically means "a grand amount of anything!".

Kilo comes from the Greek khiloi and means, curiously enough, 1000. It is interesting enough, the only prefix with a direct numerical meaning. For the rest of the stuff lookup the source I have left.

The K stands for "kilo-" which means "thousand" in some archaic language or other. Also, M stands for "mega-" which means "million," and G stands for "giga-" which means "billion."
