My son is almost 3 months old and he is a fatty. All he does is eat and he eats a lot of formula at one time. Do you think it is too soon to feed him cereal?

If he is dong well on formula why would you need to give him solids. Babies eat alot and every often. Do start giving him solids until he is 4-6 months old.

Read this article and hopefully you'll listen to me

My son was a big boy too, but our doctors told us not to start giving him cereal until he was at least 6 months old. The reason they say to wait is because at such a young age (3, 4, 5 months) the babies digestive system hasn't fully developed to handle solid foods. A child could develop a lot of problems if they're started on solids too early.

I think you'd be starting too soon if you started already...and besides, please don't take the suggestions of people here and then go out and buy some cereal if you feel like it...you need to check with your son's doctor first, tell the doc how much formula he drinks in a 24 hour period and see what the doctor says. Your son's health depend on it, and you should seek professional advice, not advice from random people here on Yahoo.

EDIT: I've just read some answers from other people...please please please DON'T put cereal (no matter how runny) in his bottle!! Bottles are designed for liquids alone, no cereal at all! A baby could choke if fed that way, cereal should always be fed to a baby who is sitting upright!

I beg you, please see your doctor before doing anything.

He probably isn't ready for rice cereal quite yet. In most cases, breast milk or formula is all a baby needs for the first 6 months of life, but some doctors may recommend introducing iron-fortified rice cereal at 4 months. Talk with your baby's doctor before starting any solids or changing formula.

the only answeer there is, what does the pediatrician say to do? he knows what is the best for your child! he should have had a couple of visits by now, and the dr. should have given you some information about feeding foods, and when! my grandson is almost 8 months and only gets baby foods until he is a year old!!!! dr. said if he has a milk allergy, it could kill him! so therefore if gerber does not make it, he doesn't get it!!! only all fruit popcicles to help with teething gums! my sister has a almost 7 month old and he has had dairy queen ice cream, chocolate, potatoes, and yams! i don't know what else. but he is a little on the chunky side!he was also getting 8 , 8 ounce bottles a day until the dr. told the mother; only 32 ounces a day! he was getting 2 times as much!so just ask your doctor what is best for your baby!!!

I think it's fine. I started feeding my daughter cereal at 4 months. She was a rollie pollie. She is too skinny now. There is no problem with your baby being a fatty as long as it's not because you are feeding too much or too much of the wrong things. I would try the cereal. Don't force it though! Good luck!!

I think I waited till mine were about 4 months. But I may have put a little bit of cereal in their bedtime bottles. Hoping to keep them a bit fuller for the nite. You might want to ask your doctor. Try to hold out a bit longer and then start with a rice or other simple cereal first.

Of course, they say to wait until the baby is at least 4 months, but I know all our parents started us even earlier then 3 months on cereal and we survived (and are healthy). My daughter was consuming so much formula, it was getting hard for me to keep up also. My Ped told me that I could mix a little cereal with her formula in the bottle. You could try this 1st. You should of course call your Ped, they may have other suggestions too for you. Always follow your thoughts, if you feel in your heart he is ready , then I say follow your instincts!

I offer cereal to my kids at 4 months. Perhaps instead of giving him cereal in a bowl, he might not be ready to push the food towards the back of his mouth yet, try adding some to his bottles. Maybe this will fill him up and he wont eat all the time? I did this with baby number 2 and it kept her fuller longer.

hope this helps and goof muck to you!

yeah you are going to want to wait until he is 4 months old. Some mother wait until they are 6 months but 4 months are a good time. Feed him baby cereal and baby fruit.

My son was drinking an 8 oz bottle every 2 hours when he was 6 weeks old, so I definately put cereal in his bottle so he would get full and my hand wasn't attached to a bottle constantly.
