I forgot about a load of laundry in the washing machine, and it has a mildew smell. I have rewashed the load twice, but it's still there. Any tips on getting rid of the smell?

This is simple. Add one cup of ammonia to the load with your regular detergent. It will kill the mildew and get rid of the smell.

All the fabric softener in the world will only mask the odor... you need it gone!

Not to worry... ammonia will do it.

Go and buy some 'nappy soaker', or if the wasing is white cotton, you can use bleach. Nappy soaker, like napisan is good because it kills bugs, which cause odours. Bleach does too, but it takes the colour out. ANyway, put the washing in the machine (top loader?) or soak it in a trough and leave it for at least 2 hours. This should kill the mould, not cover the smell. The mould will be making the laundry smell.

Try soaking it in a solution with heavy baking soda. Baking soda is a great neutralizer, however if that doesn't work perhaps nothing will get it out. Do any of them have mildew stains?

Oh yeah, use some liquid fabric softener, such as Downey to help cut the odor.

This smell is from bacteria. In order to get rid of this, you need to kill the bacteria. Try running your washer on the largest cycle, putting only bleach in the water. Use about 1 cup. This will kill the bacteria. If the problem persists, you can put about 1/8 of a cup of bleach in the water before you add the towels. This is a small enough amount that the fading will be minimized. Because towels stay wet for a while after they are used, they are likely to get smelly (bacteria again) before you wash them. You can use other detergents that can help without using bleach, but bleach is the most effective means of getting rid of the smell causing bacteria.

Ammonia. About 1/2 cup added when filled should do the trick. Done this many times. I am lousy at laundry.

Liquid Softer... a nice smelling kind. Or even Oxy Clean stain remover...that stuff is AWESOME. Just throw a cup full into a load and it makes your detergent more powerful.

This happens to me sometimes, when I don't remove the laundry right away after washing/rinsing them. I put some fabric softener then put it on a rinse cycle, works every time.

Wash in cold water with some bicarb soda and add some vanilla essence to the rinse water and hang in the sun and fresh air to dry.
