Arthur C. Clark, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein - you can't go wrong with the big 3. I'd add a 4th - Ray Bradbury

Harry Harrisson's Deathworld and Stainless Steel Rat series will keep you up.

Frank Herbert's Dune series is also a must.

L. Ron Hubbard's Mission Earth dekalogy and his Battlefield Earth is on this list too (particularly Battlefield Earth, it has everything that a good sci-fi book must have).

Philip K. Dick - his Bladerunner is a classic and shame on you if you don't know about it.

Harlan Ellison's - try to find his anthologies particularly "All the Sounds of Fear" it has "I have no Mouth and I must Scream" and "Repent, Harlequin said the Ticktockman" both classics.

Keith Laumer's Retief series.

Larry Niven's Man-Kzin Wars

Andre Norton, Frederik Pohl, Clifford D. Simak, Theodore Sturgeon, Timothy Zhan, Roger Zelazny, A.E. van Vogt.

...there's a whole lot more out there.

Maximum Ride : The Angel Experiment, Maximum Ride : Schools Out Forever, and Maximum Ride : Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports are the best. Written by James Patterson. They are set in present time, or very near future. The books are about these 6 children who have the amazing gift of Wings. The six children escaped from a science lab that grafted wings onto them while they were babies.

When the Wind Blows also by James Patterson. This book was written before Maximum Ride. This book is also about six children, Max included, who escaped from a despicable place called the School, but the similarities just about end there. this book is followed by The Lake House.

Also anything written by Margret Weis and Tracy Hickman is all golden, google them

The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury (though no longer scientifically plausible/possible) is a book that I read in one sitting.

He, She and It by Marge Piercy is more of a girl book, but I've talked to many guys who enjoyed it.

Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson is a wonderful, wonderful sci-fi. It's hysterically funny, way ahead of its time, and makes you want to leap headfirst into the world it presents. In fact, I should have put this one first.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is a classic and is also really funny.

Sci-fi can produce such great books, but it's a really easy genre to screw up in. Don't get anything with little green men on the cover. : )

1. The Sword of Shananra,,,,,,,by Terry Brooks,,,,That was the first book that got me interested in sci-fi. He's got a whole series on them

2. Pawn of Prophecy- by David Eddings,,,A 4 book series,,,but don't go for the second 4 book series (I think the first is call The King of Murgos--more or less a repeat of the first )

Enjoy,,,I know I did,,,missed lunch, dinner & toilet breaks too till bursting point,,,hehehe,,,BTW these are sword & sorcery book but still kick azs,,,,If u want more futuristics book then u 'll never be wrong with books by Azimo,,

Honor Harrington Series---David Weber
~Book 1: On Basilisk Station
~~Synopsis:
Having made him look a fool, she's been exiled to Basilisk Station in disgrace and set up for ruin by a superior who hates her.
Her demoralized crew blames her for their ship's humiliating posting to an out-of-the-way picket station.
The aborigines of the systems only habitable planet are smoking homicide-inducing hallucinogens.
Parliment isn't sure it wants to keep the place; the major local industry is smuggling; the merchant cartel wants her head; the so called "Republic" of Haven is Up To Something; and Honor Harrington has a single, over-aged light cruiser with an armament that doesn't work to police the entire star system.
But the people out to get her made one mistake. They've made her mad.

Good listings so far, but leave us not forget: Footfall by Niven and Pournelle, Hammer's Slammers, Fred Saberhagen's Berserkers, Andre Norton Galactic Derelict, The Star's are Ours AKA Ad Astra, Lord of Light by Zelasny, Star Bridge, The Merchants of Space, Pern..... back further there is Wells and Verne....
and, I'm out of date because they kept writing it faster than I could read it.

My Fav:
The Rhapsody Series (6 books now I believe)
by Elizabeth Hayden
The Wayfarer Redemption Series (6 also)
by Sarah Douglass
Both are slammed packed with action, adventure, wars, a little love, back-stabbing, betrayl, Wayfarer has people with wings and star gods, Rhapsody has dragons and time travel, etc... Both are set in medieval-like times, you know, swords and armour and stuff. No guns and automobiles...

Just read His Dark Materials Trilogy (Golden Compass....) also very wonderful

If you want something way out there, I suggest the following by Stephen Baxter:
"The Xeelee Sequence" - first four books
"Manifold Trilogy" - all three
"A Time Odyssey" - three books (Co-authored with Arthur C. Clarke)
He has degrees in mathematics and engineering so he is really deep.
