You can't substitute for a human being. But for machines... for me, it either has to be a massage recliner or the aqua massager table. For the sub $1000 category, I tried that cheapo shiatsu massage pad, HoMedics SBM-300, that you put on your chair for $100 at Bed Bath & Beyond. I was impressed with the spinal muscle relief I got from that product. Best bang for the buck. For the head, try the Tingler, looks like some odd kitchen utility but works quite well on relaxing your scalp and melting tension away. Cost $10.

I like the Jeanie Rub by Morfam. It looks like a Black and Decker Sander. It is VERY powerful. You can buy them new for something over $100 and they will not wear out in your lifetime. We use them at our massage office - chiropractors do too and using them many times a day it takes years to wear one out.
You can probably find them on ebay too.
