The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK) came into being in 1948 under Kim Il Sung and the Korean Workers Party. Kim grew up being educated in Protestant mission schools in Korea but wound up as a devoted Communist. He advanced the idea of "Ju Che" (Self Reliance) as the key to making North Korea a developed nation. This idea grew into an entire political doctrine which was taught to all North Koreans and exported overseas through various "friendship societies" organized and paid for by the North Korean government.
Kim Il Sung practiced the cult of personality and was known as the Great Leader. Any advances made in the economy, the arts, industry or the military were due solely to the thoughts and work of the Great Leader. His books were read religiously (no pun intended) and the entire nation was in lock step with his system and him. In June of 1950, the Peoples Army of North Korea invaded South Korea in force, with the expressed goal of uniting the entire peninsula under the governmental control of the Workers Party and Kim Il Sung. That invasion was countered by the first Peace Enforcement Mission ever authorized by the UN Security Council under the authority given to it in Chapter Seven of the UN Charter. A three year military action took place and a cease fire in place was arranged in 1953 which is still in effect today. Kim Il Sung ruled North Korea as Prime Minister from 1948 until 1972 and as President from 1972 until his death in July of 1994. But, his real power came from his being Secretary General of the Korean Workers Party. After his death he was succeeded in office by his son, Kim Jong Il who has taken on the national sobriquet of the "Dear Leader".
Because of the absolute totalitarian rule in North Korea and the discouragement of contact with outside nations, it has become known as the "Hermit Kingdom". The source below is to a link which gives a biography and other information on the late Kim Il Sung.
