Well, the question is how do you know how to avoid them? Lots of web sites have pop-ups on their site .. they're really, really hard to avoid but the best suggestion is to get a pop up blocker! It works really well and can be turned on or off.

Definitely. The pop ups could contain viruses (such as trojans and such), spyware and adware that invade your computer without your knowledge. Viruses kill your computer from the inside out by hanging out in your hard drive. Spyware and adware is like having a surveillance camera on you at all times. They take the information you put into the computer, such as credit card account numbers, and sell it to other mysterious people.

It's pretty scary. You can help prevent these from happening by getting Antivirus protection and regularly making scans on your computer and checking for spyware/adware.

Yes, while themselves are not malwares sites behind them usually is producers of cute utilities of such nature, but there always exception to that.
