I, personally, believe it is more of a battle between Chaos and Order - not good or evil. After all, the "Giants", who represent the raw elements themselves (Chaos) are buffered by the gods (Order). In Ragnarok, the "Giants" and the gods are against eachother - Chaos and Order. Loki is a god of Chaos, and Surt reminds me of uncontroled fire (more Chaos) Besides, I cannot view my ancestors in Helheim (whom are supposed to follow Hel whom follows her father, Loki) as "evil".

Evil=Chaos? I think not. Just because Chaos is not controlable, it is necessary, it is not evil, it just is. Is a tornado evil? No. It causes discruction, yes, but it's not vendictive, it's not out to "get" anyone. It is the Chaotic form of air. So no, Chaos is not evil. Order comes from Chaos.

Agreed. Its the battle between the Chaotic forces of the natural world and the Orderly world of the living. Kinda like Nature vs society. Chaos will win in the end to rebalance the universe and everything begins anew.
This cycle is played out on a smaller scale between Thor and the Jotnar or thurses. The Giants represent elemental, unconscious, irrational, and unstructured natural forces; where Thor represents Order and protects Asgard and Midgard from those chaotic energies. But he does not kill all the giants, only enough of them so that man can survive showing that the raw power of nature must be balanced, not obliterated. That Chaos needs to be kept in check or things will fall apart. When the world overpowers the Chaotic forces, and Order and the "human" world stamp out Nature things must somehow become balanced once again. This is when Ragnarök occurs. Nature and Chaos take over and Fire meets water once again and the cycle begins again.

Hmm.If you read the Eddas closely you will see that it is not so much chaos as revenge that Loki wants.

In 'The seeress's prophesy Odin and his brothers kill Ymir and craete various things from various of his body parts. His body becomes the land and his blood becomes the sea. This outpouring drowns all of the Frost Giants except 2. Loki is descended from the Frost Giants. Ragnarok therefore is Loki and his allies carying on a blood feud. It is interesting that Snorri gives no mention of any of the Vanir being involved in ragnarok except Frey who was in Asguard at the time. There is no mention of any of the inhabitants of Hel joining in that I can find. Though the gates of Hel are certainly opened as Baldur returns to lead the remaining Gods in his father's place.

I think chaos and order is much closer to the reality then good and evil, yes.

Chaos is not evil. Is a hurricane evil? Chaos simply is. Much like a hurricane. Niether good or evil. It just...is

Not true Freytru:
51. O'er the sea from the north | there sails a ship
With the people of Hel, | at the helm stands Loki;
After the wolf | do wild men follow,
And with them the brother | of Byleist goes

ur right.. ithink that there is no such thing as good and evil. everything that happens is in some way nessarcery and even bad stuff can lead to good.
it is all double sided.. like tripping over and braking your back.. it would really piss u off but im sure ur lawyer would enjoy the benifits they get from the lawsuit.
plus i dont get why people hate each other when esscentually we are all the same. everyone has the ability to hurt you and in different sercumstances they would... no matter how nice they can be they can still be mean. u cant judge something or someone that easily you have to take into acount the way it effects others not just the people u luv.grr i cant esplain this... umm... i guess its like nothing is ever truelly black or white just shades of gray. or maybe more or less everything is white coz isnt white made up of all different colours. everything bad is also good.
its up to u wat u do not how it effects people

Chaos and order I suppose is one perspective.

For me the battle of RagnarokR has always been about the conflict between the forces of the Gods, and those that oppose them. This battle is not only to be seen on the mystical and allegorical level as the battles between powerful diving mystical beings, it is also to be seen in the real world as the conflict between those that follow the Gods and those that want to prevent us from following them by any means they see fit, including destroying us and the informatin regarding the worship of the Gods.

Asatru is an Scandinavian term consisting of two parts: ASA (Genitive of Aesir) referring to the Germanic Gods and Goddesses (of both the Aesir and the Vanir), and Tru meaning faith. The faith is also referred to as Norse Heathenry. The Old Norse term for 'heathenry' is "heidni". Yet another Old Norse designation is "Forn Sidr", meaning "the ancient custom". Asatru is a hard-polytheistic, nature-oriented belief system and yes it is based on what is commonly known as Norse Mythology. Asatru would not be Asatru without the Scared Lore, the two cannot be separated. Those who practice Asatru are called Asatruar, Asafolk, Tru Folk, Heathens or just worshipers of the Old Gods, etc.. Strictly speaking, since Asatru is the religion which springs from the specific spiritual beliefs of the Northern Europeans, it is as old as this particular branch of the human race.

Wouldn't chaos and evil be pretty much synonymous? And Good and Order also pretty much the same?

Besides, I thought Ragnarok was just a dance party that got out of control. lol.
