It means they're taking a year off, often times to gain weight or get stronger or something, or just because they won't get any playing time in their position. They don't lose their year of eligibility. Afterwards, they're referred to as REDSHIRT freshmen or etc.

A medical redshirt doesn't count as their redshirt year, and it only happens if they lose an entire season (or very close to it) to a serious injury.

THIS IS NOT NECESSARILY TAKEN ONLY IN THEIR FRESHMAN YEAR PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

most coaches "redshirt" thier incoming freshman. It means they attend the school, participate in practices, but are not allowed to play in games.

This gives players an additional year in college. The thought is it they will be more mature, more knowledgable of the offensive/defensive scheme, and more ready to play at the collegiate level after their redshirt season.

If a player is not redshirted his freshmen season and gets injured during his career, he can use that year as a "medical redshirt". Same concept, they just dont lose that year of eligibility due to an injury.

I think it means you on the team but you are not considered on the team say a regular player can only play four year but if a player will have more potential later on than they usually red shirt them as a freshman, so they will be able to play 4 years and their freshman year so they get to play 5 yrs total

Not playing the freshman year, so you will be elligible to play 4 years as a sophomore, junior, senior, and super senior. The thought is you will be better at 22 than at 18.
