It is a gimmick. It makes people feel like things are going to be different. It also gives retailers more time to take in revenue.

Heh you think 3 AM is pointless-many malls are now doing Midnight Madness where you guessed it, they open at 12:01 AM. To me, that is just inhumane. However I can understand why people do the camping. It's an opportunity to upgrade big-ticket items like home electronics and save a bundle while doing so, and it is also a way to get a lot of Christmas shopping out of the way. A lot of the stuff is gone in the afternoon. I work in a mall and by 1 PM, we sold out of our GWP. By the time I left we sold out of some of our most popular lotions.
However in the afternoons, it's going to be significantly less crowded.

The whole point of Black Friday is everything is on sale, some things 50% or more off, which can save you a lot* of money, especially on more expensive items like TVs, music players, GPS systems, etc.
People want to get there as early as possible so they can buy what they want before they run out.
People go crazy on Black Friday, people have gotten into fist fights to get the last pack of batteries.
But again, the prices are extremely low.

To get super good deals on stuff you want; what's a little lost sleep for saving hundreds of dollars on clothing and electronics? It's the only time I usually buy stuff because it doesn't make sense to spend so much the rest of the year. Plus, it's fun to wake up early and run the streets while it's still dark out and see the other crazy/resourceful people gathering on Black Friday.

Well, by the afternoon the crowds have died down and there is nothing really left. People want to get their holiday shopping out the way, so they line up early to be the first to get those holiday specials/deals and to get the new and latest electronics while they are in stock. I would've done it too since I finally have money, but my mom wouldn't let me. Happy Holidays♥

Many stores offer huge discounts at that time of the morning. However, they may only have one of each discounted product for sale. So if you end up being the third one in the door, you may miss the sale item. Of course, you will likely buy something else. Which is what the store wants you to do.

Ya know, I remember when black Friday sales used to start at 6 a.m., then it was 5...now this year all the ads were for 4 a.m. I know some people like to go really early and get the specials, but I'm not one of them!

It's all about marketing. The stores are trying to make a big deal out of the entire process so that people will spend money this holiday season. Also, it makes a good story so the media wants to report about it..which in turn equals extra advertisement for the stores.

i don't know but people want to be there first. If it was in the afternoon they probably still would have people there at a ridiculous hour.

Because they usually have really expensive things at a really lowered price,BUT they usually only have a certain number of that product.
For example Best Buy had a really really good offer for a specific laptop BUT the catch was....there were only FIFTEEN in the store.
thats just one example but there were more.
