The city of Berlin was divided into four sectors: Unite States (American), British, French and Russian. The rest of Germany was under the rule of American Occupation Forces, the Supreme Commander being General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eventually, government took two forms: West Germany with democratic principals; East Germany with dictatorial (ie: Communistic) principals. With the fall of Russia (& the Berlin Wall), Germany was unified once again.

It was divided into four zones of occupation for the three main European allied powers and the U.S. Berlin, though in the Russian sector was also divided into four.

Within a short space of time the three occupation zones governed by France, England, and the U.S. became self governing, but the Soviet zone became East Germany, and was not reunited with the rest until the dissolution of the Soviet Republic in 1989.
