I would agree that the term "true self" is more in line with following a destiny or "pre" destiny. I can see where the true self could be defined, especially when used in this context, as the author's soul or a psyche with us from birth.
The second quote replaces such a permanent term as "true self" with the idea that his actions are based in the moment and without permanency.
Spontaneous free will versus destined algorithm.

Unless you want to confuse yourself even further people do not ask for a second opinion, because decisions are not to be made based on opinions. Opinions are but like a kaleidoscope. Different people view it differently and so even though we look at the same thing we all come out with different opinions, which can all be accomodated as long as it fits the given circumstances and situations. So what is good for you may not be good for me and so on. So where do we draw lines. Think within your set up, and write down what is more viable to you and your surrounding without harming any one or every one.

"true self" means listening to your higher self, the part of you that is in tune with the Highest Good for All / God / Truth...
as for the second one, well... a lot of things "spontaneously well up" in us that should NOT be listened to, that we should try to overcome...
so yes, those quotes have very different meanings... almost opposing meanings...
you're talking about "soul" (doing what you know deep down is the right thing / what you should do/ what is best) versus "ego" (sensory pleasure, immediate gratification, etc) ... my teacher used to say, "The voice of the ego shouts; the soul whispers..."

no i do not think the first one is about following your destiny because it says "i want to live according to what comes from my true self"....destiny is not something that is innate in you, although personality can affect it a great deal.....so i think they have both the same meaning of wishing to be free to live as one likes , although the first one is more beautifully said.

i would say the first shows more thought, by saying true self, that one would want to live by what they felt deeply to be the right way
the second says they wish to be spontaneous, to go with whatever feeling/thought they had in the moment

"the money powers prey upon the rustic in circumstances of peace and conspire against it in circumstances of adversity. that's greater despotic than a monarchy, greater insolent than autocracy, and greater egocentric than paperwork. It denounces as public enemies, all who question its procedures or throw mild upon its crimes. I even have 2 great enemies, the Southern military in front of me and the Bankers interior the rear. Of the two, the only at my rear is my excellent foe.. firms have been enthroned and an era of corruption in intense places will shop on with, and the money powers of the rustic will enterprise to extend its reign by employing working upon the prejudices of the individuals till the wealth is aggregated interior the palms of a few, and the Republic is destroyed." Abraham Lincoln Lincoln became into the consummate baby-kisser of his day, feigning disdain for a “universal” foe on a similar time as doing their bidding. Now, 149 years after Lincoln, the government he regularly occurring is doing all it could to “save” the money powers. Lincoln could be proud.

The first one sounds more like trying to be yourself, while the second one sounds more like trying new things. The real difference sounds like character versus actions.
