i know its the sound piece but why do they need a green dot?

The QB doesn't have to be the one with the green dot. It could be any one player. Only one player with a radio from each team is allowed on the field at a time. The green dot makes it easy to notice which player has the radio.

This question has been asked so many times on here that I changed my name to Green dot on helmet. The real answer: it is a mind control device that causes people to ask that same question every 2 hours. Either that, or someone forgot to take the price tag off. Zakk- you are wrong, there are no microphones in the helmet of defensive players. That was voted down by the owners and is why the Pats could videotape the defensive signals of the other team. I think there may be defensive microphones next year because of Bellicheat. There is no way you saw a green dot on Tatupu's helmet. Also, if Seneca Wallace is on the field with Matt Hasslebeck, he has to wear a helmet without a microphone, so he would wear a different helmet than if he is playing QB. He wouldn't wear a green dot helmet when he's playing receiver.

that shows which helmet has the communication system on it so that the head coach can tell the qb what play to run. and theres only 1 green dotted helmet allowed on the field at once.

Why? Don't they put the mic in helmets other than the QB?

seems a bit rediculous to me too.
