Step one: Find a common denominator for BOTH fractions.
Step two: Subtract the second numerator from the first numerator.
Step three: Put that answer on top of the common denominator.
Step four: Reduce your answer, if possible.

1, find the least common denominator if the fractions have 2 or more different denominators
2. whatever you do to the denominator to get it to be like then you must do to the numerator by the same number
3. Follow the indicated operation of subtraction
4. Get the fractions into its simpliest form,.
5 An example would be

5/6-1/8-1/2-1/4=

lcd would be 24=2x2x2x3
6=3*2
2=2
4=2*2
8=2*2*2
5/6=20 /24 since 6x4=24 you must make the numerator multiply by4

-1/8=3/24 3
-1/2=12/24 2
-1/4=6/24 4

20/24-3/24-12/24-6/24=-1/24

Change all the fractions so that the denominators are common, i.e. find the LCM or Least Common Multiple.
ex.
1/3 + 2/5
LCM is 15 because 15 is a multiple of both 3 and 5.
5/15+ 6/15= 11/15
Oh, subtracting, sorry. Put in a minus sign,
5/15- 6/15= -1/15

Example (1) 5/10 -3/10
In this problem, both the denominators are the same. So you can take it common denominator & write it as:
(5-3) / 10 = 2/10 = 1/5
===================
Example (2) 3/4 - 2/6
In this example denominators are different. We have to find the LCM of the denominators.
2)4, 6
. . --------
. . .2, 3
So, LCM = 2 x 2 x 3 = 12. ie. 12 is the smallest number which can be divided both by 4 & 6
Take this as a common denominator.
3/4 can be (3x3) / (4x3)= 9/12 {multiplying both numerator and denominator by the same number, 3}
&
2/6 can be (2x2) / (6x2) = (4/12) {multiplying both numerator and denominator by the same number, 2}
Now our problem can be written as,
(3/4) - (2/6) = (9/12) - (4/12) = (9-4) / 12 = 5/12
