I like to discover new music everyday because I hate listening to the same mainstream bands everytime on the radio. Can anyone suggest some artists for me?

A couple of bands I've heard and liked in my neck of the woods that haven't necessarily gotten alot of airplay:
Widespread Panic ( kinda along the lines of Phish and The Grateful Dead)
Rollin' in the Hay- they've been described as renegade bluegrass
Indigo Girls have some good acoustic stuff (Closer to Fine)
Adelayda is also a good rock/alt band and had a couple of popular songs a few years ago (Not Tonight is good)

Hmm, ignore the second and fourth responses, I didn't think that popified emo music and melancholy droning about how hard middle class suburban life was considered non-mainstream these days by the masses, but if you're only exposed to what corporate radio tells you to listen to, right?

For a good quick fix, find a college radio station in your area, you can always find massive amounts of good music you'd never hear of otherwise on college radio. Personally, I listen to CJSW (www.cjsw.com), broadcast from the University of Calgary, and the following is a short list of bands I discovered from listening to them.

Mountain Goats
Spoon
Poets of the Fall
The The
Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire!
Black Mountain
Bloc Party
Pineapple Thief
The Album Leaf
The Good Life
The Secret Machines
Tilly and the Wall
Weakerthans

The band is "Over The Rhine" from Cincinnati Ohio.
They've been around since 1990, and have released 17 Cd's. Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, the married couple at the heart of the band have recently been named to Paste magazine’s list of the "100 Best Living Songwriters"

The sound is kind of hard to pinpoint, but it expands beyond rock to encompass elements of country and jazz, with a rich sophistication to piano-led chamber ballads and jazz-inflected folk.

I really think you'd like them!
