Why aren't pregnant women allowed to eat hot dogs? I read that a while back, just didn't know why. Is there a special way I can cook it or anything? Please, I am desperate!

Thanks everyone, I burnt the crisp out of it, and ate it immediately. Sorry for the panic question!

I did a search online and came up with some ideas. Babycenter.come said that as long as a hot dog is properly cooked to the appropriate temperature and eaten right away then they are okay for a once and a while treat. I will put the website here for that information. It said that because of the nitrates it should be a once in a while treat.

I also looked at the FDA website and they said to not eat it and if you do make sure that they are hot. The website for that is : http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~pregnant/pregnant.html

I guess the biggest point is to ask your DR or midwife what they say and wait until you talk to them about what you should or should not eat.

Well, there certainly isn't any law saying you can't eat a hot dog. It all comes down to medical advice, really.
Hot dogs, due to the content and also the manner in which they are preserved and packaged, can carry a bacteria called Lysteria.
This bacteria can be highly dangerous for a pregnant woman, and her unborn child.
Lysteria is not exclusive to hot dogs, either. You can also be exposed to it from eating packaged lunch meats like you find in your regular grocery market.

The general rule is that if you MUST eat any of these things, to heat them until cooked completely and steaming.
While the idea of lunch meat being cooked to steaming may not sound appealing, the alternative (Lysteria) is much worse.

Cook the hot dog well. And I recommend boiling it as opposed to microwaving, for a multitude of reasons. Eat it as quickly as you can after that, and just keep a check on how you feel. The initial symptoms of Lysteria can mimic that of the flu.

Just make sure it's cooked thoroughly, and enjoy it. The stress it's causing you to crave one and not have it is far more detrimental than just eating the silly thing. It's not drugs or alcohol. You'll be fine.

You can have a hot dog here and there, just don't eat them on a daily basis. Just make sure they are cooked thoroughly.

You can have a hot dog as long as you heat it up to steaming first. You can't eat it cold because it could contain listeria. Enjoy!!

There is a risk of listeria to the baby. Eat a tofu dog and eliminate the risk, or if you must, eat one that you microwave to the point of almost being exploded.

It's mostly because of bacteria, just cook it well.

"Do not eat hot dogs, luncheon meats or deli meats unless they are properly reheated to steaming (or 160 F): "
